Bedroom Set Guide

Furnishing and decorating a bedroom can feel intimidating, like you’re looking at a blank canvas. Where do you begin? Purchasing a bedroom set gives you all the essential furniture pieces, so you can focus on decorating your bedroom to your taste. In this bedroom set guide, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about choosing the right bedroom set for your needs.

What Is Included in a Bedroom Set?

A bedroom set can have as little as two or three pieces or up to seven or more in an expanded set. A basic bedroom set includes a bed, headboard and nightstand. It also typically includes a dresser, but some shoppers may prefer to strictly use armoires or closets to store clothing.  Expanded sets may include bedroom vanities, chests, benches, and even a mirror or lamp.

You can always add on to bedroom sets later, but purchasing an expanded bedroom set can save you money and provide a uniform look to a room. Mixing and matching styles is also a popular trend that’s quickly becoming classic.

Common Bedroom Set Styles

What styles of bedrooms are there? How do you select a theme for your bedroom? We’ve put together a list of the most popular bedroom furniture style trends to help you decide.

Modern/Contemporary

Modern style, also known as contemporary, may sound more well-suited for an open office floor plan than a bedroom. However, the modern style focuses on open and inviting space, including warm woods, vibrant colors and soft textures. It can also include stainless steel. neutrals, whites and off-whites.

Rustic/Farmhouse

Rustic or farmhouse style is a welcoming and comfortable aesthetic that is family-friendly. Any scratches a pet or child adds to furniture only deepens the authenticity of a lived-in look.

When you picture “farmhouse” or “rustic,” what do you see? The farmhouse style embraces rural architecture, such as worn metals, reclaimed wood and warm woods. However, a more rustic style focuses on keeping the original elements of wood as close to natural as possible, including all shapes, knots, grains and imperfections.

Interestingly, farmhouse style is a much broader aesthetic that can mix and mingle other aesthetics. If you prefer to mix some elements of rustic style with modern, then you can. Paint the walls an off-white color and mix metals and reclaimed wood, for example.

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern (MCM) is a design movement originating in the United States in the post World War II period from 1945 to 1969. It encompassed interior design, architecture, urban development, and product and graphic design. The term was first described as a design movement by Cara Greenberg in her 1984 book called Mid-Century Modern. The style includes clean and simple lines, honest use of materials and focuses on practical comfort. Decorative embellishments are avoided.

Glam

Do you vibe off luxurious surroundings? Glam embraces glitz, extravagance and sparkle, but it doesn’t have to be over-the-top. Start with a traditional look and add in the ornamental details to achieve elegance.

Think dramatic lighting with tabletop lamps and chandeliers with dripping crystals overhead. Add gold accents to enrich the bedroom’s style without overpowering it. For a vintage charm, look to glam’s older cousin art deco for inspiration. Marble tables with art deco details on the legs paired with gold lamps or candlesticks add glam to a room. Geometric designs with a little glitz are another way to embrace the glam style.

Boho

Boho draws on inspiration from bohemian and hippie influences as well as those types of individuals who lead an unconventional life, such as actors and artists. Bohemian style combines colors, patterns and objects from different areas of the world to create an eclectic and eccentric look that truly makes a place your own. Whether you’re a world traveler or multipotentialite, a boho style can make your bedroom the perfect place to dream and simply be.

The best thing about boho style is that there are no rules. However, boho style commonly makes use of earth tones, jewel tones, deep browns and metallics while using bolder “hippie” designs and colors as accents. Go to your local plant shop to add exotic plants to your boho bedroom.

Consider a low bed with hanging tapestries. Woven jute rugs placed next to the bed add natural texture. Ottomans and daybeds are perfect furniture pieces for this style.

French Country/French Provincial

French country is a specific form of design that encompasses other more specific categories, such as French provincial. However, French country and French provincial are often used interchangeably due to popularity. French provincial is often considered to be the more elegant style and is inspired by furnishing style from the 1700s and 1800s, while other forms of the style may take on a more rustic approach.

Bed Sizes

Different decorating and furnishing styles may fit bigger rooms better than smaller rooms, such those requiring heavier wooden furniture and extended bedroom sets. Before settling on a style, you should also consider the size of the room and the bed size that you need.

Twin

A twin mattress is usually 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. It fits bunk beds, day beds and small bed frames. You may also see a Twin XL size, and that is typically 38 inches wide by 80 inches long. A twin size mattress may not be the best fit for an adult.

Full

A full mattress is typically 54 inches wide by 75 inches long and fits most rooms. These do well for individuals who like to stretch out or for a small guest room. A larger size may be best for couples who need their own space when sleeping.

Queen

A queen size mattress is usually 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. A queen mattress is the most popular choice among couples who like a little room to stretch out but still wish to be close. It’s a popular choice for guest rooms.

King

A king mattress is typically 76 inches long by 80 inches wide. A king mattress allows restless couples more room to stretch out and sleep. If your family co-sleeps with a small child, a king mattress will work for you.

California King

A California king mattress is usually 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. A king mattress offers four extra inches of width than a California King, but it’s four inches narrower. A California king mattress is the best option for taller individuals.

Bedroom Sets With Storage

Depending on room and family size, storage room is another important consideration. The most convenient types of storage are bookcase beds and beds with drawers underneath.

Bookcase Bed

Bookcase beds are also known as bookshelf beds. These beds allow you to keep a number of items within reach that a nightstand won’t accommodate. If you are the type to wind down with a book before sleeping, then a bookcase bed is also a good investment in your bedtime routine.

Bed With Storage Underneath

Beds can quickly become cluttered with extra clothes and blankets. Under bed storage offers an “out of sight, out of mind” strategy for better organization. Under bed drawers are a handy place to store extra blankets, clothes and miscellaneous items.
