My Childhood Couch

My Childhood Couch

Good things come in small Packages

Hey Everyone! I’m sitting here at the office and I’m thinking about furniture. I was at my grandparents house recently, helping to pack up some odds and ends. When I was in their living room, I took a moment to sit down in my grandpa’s old leather recliner. It’s strange how furniture does this, but it still felt like it belonged to him, even though no one has really sat in it for the last eight years.

Furniture is really amazing. It becomes part of the family. It’s hard to throw it away, and that’s why we find ourselves hauling our old furniture down to the basement when new furniture comes in, or we pass it on to our sons and daughters when they go off to college. We don’t throw away our furniture for the same reason we don’t throw away our relationships. It’s not just something you buy, you collect it, it has meaning to you.

When I think about a family who orders a sectional couch, I don’t get this mental image of them standing around their couch just looking at it. I see family movie night, rainy day board games, and even impromptu recovery wards for the stomach flu.

Growing up, I had this hideous sofa (pictured) that looked like it had been upholstered with grey, brown, beige, and black yarn; it was straight out of the 70’s. One of the things I loved about it was that the armrests were even with the back of the couch and it gave it this over-sized feeling when you sat on it. One of the added benefits was that when you took the cushions off and tipped it over on it’s side, it became an impenetrable fortress! This thing was indestructible. The number of times that I climbed to the top, lifted both hands to the sky and dove forward to deliver a “Macho Man Elbow Drop from the Top Rope” on my unsuspecting father are too many to count…

These aren’t just memories, these are parts of who we are, almost like our DNA. At Coleman Furniture, we hope that you feel the same way about your furniture. If you have a story that you would love to share with us, we would love to hear from you! Just leave a comment below and make sure to share this post with your friends and family!
